Summer Activities at the Tucker Recreation Center

There are lots of things to do at the Tucker Rec Center this summer.

It’s a busy time at the Tucker Recreation Center. The Center’s Summer Day Camp is filled to capacity with more than 200 children already signed up for daily activities. College and high school students staff the summer camp where kids from ages five to fifteen can enjoy field trips, arts & crafts, dancing, and gym time among other activities.

The Summer Day Camp program books up early year after year according to Nena Hood who manages the Center’s front desk.

“We’re one of the biggest camps in Dekalb County,” Hood said. “Right now we have so many that we’re not accepting any more applications because we’ve got our hands full.”

Seniors are also flocking to the center for their year-round fitness and social activities. Silver Foxes, a senior exercise group, meet on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30. Another senior exercise group meets on Mondays and Fridays at the same time.

Adults and youth of all ages can enjoy classes offered by local instructors who rent out space in the recreation center. Most activities are free but those taught by local residents require a small fee. Among the classes offered are pottery, creative writing, sewing, piano lessons, gymnastics and taekwondo. Tutoring is also offered for children and teenagers at $35 per hour.
