Georgia Shakespeare: Shutting the Doors May Be Only Option

Co-Founder Richard Garner talks to Brookhaven Patch about the non-profit's urgent need to raise $150,000 by Sept. 25.

A 26-year-old Atlanta institution that year-after-year gives the metro area high-quality, professional productions of Shakespeare's greatest works could be closing its doors if it doesn't raise $150,000 by Sept. 25.

Richard Garner, a founder and Producing Artistic Director of spoke with Patch Saturday afternoon to discuss the urgency of its fundraising efforts and how the economy effected the group's debt.

Garner said that once the $150,000 is raised, he will hire a Managing Administrative Director to handle the administrative responsibilities that he said was sorely lacking within the organization. He also said that the organization would make other structural changes to ensure Georgia Shakespeare stays financially healthy in the future.

The company, which employs about 200 artists a year, and has 8.5 staffers has been in Brookhaven on the campus of for more than 15 years.
