'Walk To Remember' Returns

Sixth annual event stresses the importance of organ donation.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, the Mountain Mums Garden Club's Memorial Triangle will once again be in the spotlight with another 'Walk to Remember.' This year marks the sixth anniversary of our Memorial tree planting. On Jan. 20, 2007 the Mountain Mums planted seven Japanese Magnolia trees for young neighbors who lost their lives in car accidents. The Hwy. 78 Triangle has blossomed over the years with many more plantings and informative signs to commemorate our project. We are proud to honor these special children.

This year's WTR is sponsored by The Metropolitan (an in-town business and arts district), Kroger, Promotional Advertising, Tucker House, the Garden Enthusiast, Pin-Centives, SRCA, Smoke Rise Agents and Donate Life sponsors Joe and Vicki Persichetti. Joe has been living many years with a teenager's heart after a transplant and travels to walks like ours, spreading the word about the importance of organ donation.

The 2013 4k walk will be on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 9:30 a.m., beginning at the upper parking lot of Smoke Rise Baptist Church on Hugh Howell Road and continuing towards the sidewalk in front of Smoke Rise Elementary, then on to Lilburn Stone Mountain Road, continuing past the BP gas station, and back up to the church.

It is a relatively easy walk for all ages! We will have multiple DeKalb County Police Officers from the Tucker Precinct directing traffic at each intersection.  Our neighborhood Officer Serena Salzer will be our Chief for the day. She will determine if there are any weather issues that might postpone WTR to the following Saturday (1/26). We appreciate their help keeping our walkers and runners safe.

Kroger will once again be supplying the water and refreshments - delicious fruit last year. No Kroger also teamed up with the Mums by purchasing 'No Texting' signs that were placed in local school carpool lanes - quite a project that promoted our continuing mission of safe driving - especially for teens.

If you walked with us last year we would love for you to wear your 2012 t-shirt. We are not ordering more t-shirts this year (there will be a new design next year). Therefore, we will distribute the remaining t-shirts to the walkers who get to the starting gate early.

In keeping with our Mountain Mums' 2012/2013 theme: "Enhancing and brightening the lives of others by lovingly providing guided hands-on Garden related experiences"- WTR will be adding an additional activity this year. The first 100 walkers will be given a red tulip bulb to be placed along our path.

Registration fee is $10; children under 10 are FREE! Register at Tucker House and the Garden Enthusiast. The funds collected will go directly to supporting and enhancing our Memorial Triangle and other Smoke Rise community projects. We hope to see you there!
