Local Park's Future In Question

A meeting to discuss plans for Johns' Homestead Park takes place on Tuesday.

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs and the DeKalb County Natural Resources Management Office will hold a meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the future of Johns’ Homestead, a county park located at 3071 Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker.

The meeting will take place Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church, 2997 Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker.

The Johns family built the first house on the property in 1827 and also assisted with the construction of the first church building at Rehoboth. The family lived on and farmed the property until the 1980s.

DeKalb County purchased 23 acres from the Johns family in 2004 and another 24 acres containing the Twin Brothers Lakes in 2006, making the park 47 acres in all.

Public involvement to discuss management of the historic house, proposed improvements at the park, and vision of the park’s future is encouraged.
