Livsey School Backers Fight Back

Letter-writing and information campaign launched

Livsey Elementary’s future may be in doubt based on a Jan. 3 preliminary closing list. Nevertheless, the school’s loyal defenders are working overtime to influence Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson’s Feb. 7 recommendation to the DeKalb School Board.

You can witness these efforts by visiting www.savelivsey.com. From that website, Livsey boosters have provided links encouraging supporters to send a letter to Tyson. That letter touts the school’s strengths and respectfully asks the interim superintendent to consider more factors than size.

The letter correctly notes that Livsey’s closing would hurt nearby neighborhoods; residents point out Livsey’s award-winning reputation has brought many young families to the area.

The Save Livsey website also summarizes the school’s numerous awards and accomplishments. For example, Livsey has made the No Child Left Behind Act’s Adequate Yearly Progress standard from 2003-2010.

In addition, Livsey’s scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests are normally near the top of DeKalb County schools. The ITBS is a test that shows how Georgia students compare to the rest of the nation while the CRCT is a statewide comparison.

As noted in a recent Patch article by Stephanie Arnold, the six public input meetings concerning the redistricting/consolidation are scheduled from Jan. 18-27 at various DeKalb schools. All meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tyson’s Feb. 7 recommendation will follow.
