Handgun the Prize in Raffle Fundraiser for Girls' Softball Team

What's your take on a gun raffle to raise money for youth sports teams?

A Georgia girls' softball team isn’t selling cookies, magazines or gift-wrapping paper to raise money this spring.

Instead, the Georgia Heat Select ’05 is raffling off a revolver — a Taurus Judge, to be exact — and it’s attracting attention.

A parent sent a copy of the raffle flyer to WSB-TV, which gauged local reaction at West Walton Park near Loganville. The comments ranged from “not a good idea” to “perfectly fine.”

The raffle is benefitting the Loganville-based team of 8- and 9-year-olds to help cover expenses this season.

Anybody with kids involved in sports knows how costly it is, especially for teams that play in out-of-town tournaments with the costs of entry fees, travel, food and lodging. A tournament this weekend in Dublin, Ga., has a $300 entry fee, for one example.

The WSB report has attracted attention on social media. The Facebook page of the ’05 Georgia Heat Softball Factory — which is not affiliated with the Loganville program — had some inquiries about ticket availability Thursday morning.

This is hardly the first time a youth sports program has raffled off a firearm to raise money — a simple “softball gun raffle” internet search will show you that.

Last spring, a St. Helens, Ore., softball league raffled off an AR-15 rifle, sparking strong criticism.

What’s your take?

Is a gun raffle a suitable way to raise money for youth sports teams? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

K.C. I gave you ample opportunity to educate yourself on all matters that we have discussed, even asking you to view by vast library of postings here on Patch. It is sad when a Man cannot simply admit defeat by a Woman. It is pathetic that a Woman knows more about weapons, rule and law, morality, integrity, and teaching young children right from wrong than a MAN that is exposed to those poor innocent girls on a regular basis. What is even more disturbing is that YOU have done nothing but call a Black Woman hateful names -- uppity bitch, bigot, fool --- YOU have assaulted me with everything except N##### --- what a proud White Man you are! Unfortunately, WE all are mortified to learn that the PARENTS from your team are using young girls as a pawn to get money to go on a glorified FREE vacation. You seem to have no remorse in ALL the BAD that has been exposed on YOUR TEAM. The Show Stopper is now everyone can see the WORST of YOU, the PARENTS and your TEAM. ...... YOU, K.C are a RACIST !!!

Ann Hudren, I did not know or care whether you were Black, White, Brown or GREEN, you were simply WRONG. You however have resorted to calling me a LIAR, proud WHITE MAN and RACIST simply because I disagree with your OPINION. If not agreeing with you makes me a Racist then I must be a RACIST because I don't agree with you!

Ssome of these comments are getting way out of control. The idea behind the article is to raise awareness to the fund raising event that one team wants to use to get money to support the team. Now it has turned into the lowest form of expression....... Name calling. If you want to get a ticket then buy one if not do not. but please stop insulting each other. There is no place and in this format for personal attacks and the editors should not permit this type of behavior. Each of us have an opinion on this subject and have a right to express their thoughts but leave the name calling out.

Mack, This is what happens when someone uses passive-aggressive behavior, aka Ann Hudson. There have also been a few trolls adding there "opinions" hoping to stir the pot rather than having a dialog. Hope I spelled everything correctly....sure wouldn't want Ann to get her panties in a wad and verbally abuse me too.

I don't think Ive every come across an article on Patch with comments that didn't end up in name calling & harsh accusations. I cant believe the way some ppl argue with strangers over a stupid thing like license plates, fund raising, robberies & sentences of criminals. I guess every1 gets muscles & mouthy when they're behind the keyboard. Is there a class for that?
