Tucker's HOI Receives Matching Grant for Education Scholarships

15 Scholarships Provided to Assist in Honduran Students’ Educational Needs

Tucker-based HOI, the international Christian-based mission program that operates schools, clinics and volunteer work groups in Honduran and Nicaraguan villages, has announced it has received a matching grant donation for 15 scholarships of $600 each for Honduran students. The scholarships will be provided to students attending Aldersgate Elementary and Hope Middle School in Culuco, Olancho, Honduras.

“The generosity of these matching grant donors will really kick start our efforts,” said HOI CEO Jerry Eickoff. “Our goal is to ensure that each of our 240 students have scholarships for long-term support; this will help them break the cycle of poverty.”

Laurie Boltin, Educational Coordinator of HOI, said, “We are so excited to receive this grant. The generosity of this donor is a true blessing. It is the hope of HOI that it encourages others to support students.”

The scholarships give students access to the only local library in the Agalta Valley. This, along with Rotary International’s donation of advanced computer labs, provides a quality education past the sixth grade. Additionally, HOI schools provide an excellent learning environment, high academic standards, leadership development, community outreach opportunities and Christian instruction. Funds also support nutritious meals for elementary students, teacher and administrative staff salaries, registration, tuition, testing costs, and school operating costs (maintenance, office supplies, etc.).

Once a donor is connected with a student, he/she will have the opportunity to write and receive letters and photos and obtain annual progress reports.

Formerly named Honduras Outreach Inc., HOI has coordinated mission trips for thousands of volunteers from all over the U.S. for nearly 25 years, sending more than 800 volunteers annually to the rural Agalta Valley of Honduras.  In addition to the community development work accomplished by volunteers, HOI’s local Honduran staff serves the area through programs in healthcare, education, agriculture and economic and spiritual development. In August 2013, HOI expanded its outreach by sending mission teams to Northern Nicaragua. More information can be found at www.hoi.org.
