Important Update - Today's DeKalb BOE Hearing Will Be Webcast

Yesterday afternoon, I was informed that the State Board of Education (“BOE”) was not going to webcast today’s proceedings concerning the DeKalb Board of Education. I then sent a request asking the State BOE to reconsider because of the public’s interest to observe the proceedings and the reasonableness of the request.

The State BOE quickly replied to me that they would consider my request. This morning, I was very pleased to receive notice that the State BOE met this morning and approved the webcast of today’s proceedings. I commend the State BOE for its quick action and for its commitment to transparency.

The hearing begins at 1 p.m. today and you can watch live via webcast.

Rep. Holcomb I commend you on your diligence in prevailing on the BOE to release this critical proceeding.

Thank you,

"What’s at stake is Georgia’s ability to deal with systemic problems in its educational system, and a real measure of Governor Deal’s leadership. " - Mike Hassinger

Mr. Hassinger is a well known, respected political consultant, a fellow Brookhavenite.

His write-up is bulletproof, today we see if the system can right the endemic wrongs of a truly poor process.

“If the governor removes this board, who do you think is going to get re-elected? … People who represent the same thought processes,” said Don McChesney, a former North DeKalb school board member who was defeated for re-election last year."

Surprising comment to come from someone who did not get re-elected. In fact, voters threw out every incumbent on the ballot during the last school board election, July 2012 (which should have been held in November by law but was somehow changed without anyone noticing even without a final district map approved and in front of voters).

The only exception was Dr. Speaks for the Superdistrict 8, which covers the half of the county that Walker doesn't believe he should represent at all. Dr. Speaks was the right choice esp. in light of the fact that her only opposition was a woman who did not show up for any of the public forums (that I am aware of) except one that she may have attended by speaker phone. And, the only campaigning she did was very last minute, to people outside her district lines and with a very racially charged robo-call.

Given the choice better, bad and worse, voters were at least able to elect "bad" this last time, so let's not accept the idea that poor voting habits will put us back where we started.

If you want to figure out a way to get better candidates onto the ballot, that's an issue worthy of discussion. And, perhaps an appointed board with a motivated Governor (who at least wants to save the cash cow so it can bring in some more money for the state to take away from us) will be the heavy hand to give the administrative the slim down or ship out mandate that is so badly needed.

Thank you Rep Holcomb! We were able to watch the proceedings and post copious notes on them live today thanks to you, the State Board and the technical staff at the state. If anyone would like to read our notes on the proceedings, they are posted in the comments here:
