DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis joined county law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in honoring fallen officers during the annual Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial ceremony held today in front of the memorial wall near the Old Courthouse in downtown Decatur. The wall bears the names of fallen officers in DeKalb County, dating back to 1852.

“To those who stand in memory of a fallen officer today, remember that their service was not in vain and their sacrifice will never be forgotten in our community. To our law enforcement officers here with us this morning, know that we do not take lightly your commitment to our county and we are indebted to you and your families for your service. And to our citizens and other stakeholders, let us remember that our law enforcement officers are the most noble among us,” said CEO Ellis.  

A special tribute was made to the memory of Detective Robert Shane Wilson with the Doraville Police Department, who lost his life in the line of duty in November. His son, Liam, led the pledge of allegiance during the ceremony.  

Since 1852, 40 police officers from DeKalb County agencies, including those in cities in the county, have been killed in the line of duty.
