Tucker Flower Shop Wins Holiday Contest
Long-standing local florist takes top prize in a storefront decorating contest.
Winners have been announced in the Downtown Tucker Business Holiday Decorating Contest.
First place goes to the Tucker Flower Shop which, according to proud owner Julia McDonald, is the oldest business in town. When asked how she felt about winning the $500 prize, she had a one-word answer: "Ecstatic!"
Runner-up is the Custom Frame Shop, owned by Kelly Holloway. "We literally threw this together at the last minute," she said. "It's kinda funny." Her design includes a detailed scene from the Nutcracker complete with dancing ballerinas.
Next up is Larry Shupbach's Village Shoe Service, and Matthews Cafeteria receives an honorable mention.
The contest was sponsored by the Tucker Business Association, Main Street Tucker Alliance and the Tucker Historical Society, and participants were businesses within the downtown area, as defined by Brockett Road, LaVista Road, Lawrenceville Highway and Tucker Industrial Road.

Sorry, looks like a hot mess if you ask me. It is a great florist, but this appears to be a normal holiday window decoration for a florist business, not a "Holiday Decorating Contest" display.

The photo does not show case the display well. You need to see it in person.

They always have the best window for any season in this area including Decatur. Always great arrangements and nice people. Glad they got some attention.

The awards were decided by MTA and TBA not THS which is unfortunate. This seems like all the fun has gone from Tucker. Instead of being a fun homespun event for Tucker families this whole thing has turned into a MTA/TBA production with awards going to the top professionals!! Very disappointing this year.

Only two "Scrooge" comments. Not bad. Actually, Tucker Historical WAS involved in the decision and the entire process. They did not have a representative in the photo op because of a communication and server error. However, they were involved in the entire process. What is most disappointing is the lack of the number or participants. The quality of those who did participate was very good.

Charlton is right - THS has been involved the whole time and remains a great community partner for Tucker. I wish I could have been there for all of the pictures as well, but sometimes I lose control over my own schedule!
I would like to send kudos to Kevin Madigan for taking the photos - and then going back out at night to take better photos. It really pops with the darker backdrop ...
I hope next year there is even more participation. Main Street looks great and we should have a wonderful celebration tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:00 for the tree lighting.
Shameless plug, I know ...

Kevin- I would like to correct an error in your article in reference to Tucker Flower Shop- I stated that we were the Oldest Flower Shop in Tucker- Certainly not the oldest
business. Tucker Flower Shop has been in business for over 60 years at the same location!

My mistake! Thanks, Julia.

It was a fun contest for the Tucker community, it motivated vendors to step up and get creative with their displays. It certainly bought some holiday cheer to Main Street.

I have not seen the first place winners display but the frame shop display is really original plus looks great in person. I need to check out the Shoe store display in person too - the picture makes it look rather plain.
