Tucker CID Is DeKalb’s Newest Community Improvement District

A CID is a self-taxing district that uses additional property tax dollars to make transportation and infrastructure improvements.

After working several months on the project, volunteers with the Tucker Community Improvement District (CID) Formation Committee cheered when the DeKalb Board of Commissioners unanimously approved DeKalb’s third CID in the Tucker area.

“I can’t express how pleased I am with all of the people who came together to make this possible,” said Honey Van De Kreke, co-manager of the Main Street Tucker Alliance and the Tucker CID Formation Committee. “This is the third CID in DeKalb and to my knowledge the only one formed totally by volunteers.”

“After the success of the Tucker LCI and the Tucker Overlay District, there is now a funding mechanism that can improve the area such as accelerating transportation and infrastructure improvement projects,” said District 1 Commissioner Elaine Boyer. “I am proud that all three DeKalb County CID’s are in District 1.”

The Tucker CID was created by a coalition of business and property owners who believe the vast resources of the Tucker area should be harnessed to maximize the area’s full potential. By combining efforts, Tucker is poised to become a thriving activity center that provides positive economic development and supports the life long community that is in the Tucker long range plan.

The general boundaries of the Tucker CID are the commercial properties along LaVista Road, Lawrenceville Highway and Hugh Howell Road between I-285 and Mountain Industrial Boulevard, adjacent to the already existing Stone Mountain CID.

“I applaud the Tucker Business community for stepping up to the plate and creating one of the most innovative tools for economic development and refining community identity. This will increase Tucker’s ability to promote itself as a place in which businesses flourish,” said Super District 7 Commissioner Stan Watson.

“The Tucker CID will enhance the economic vitality of Tucker’s business district by strengthening the area’s role as the center of commercial activity and opportunity, said DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis. “Great things are happening in Tucker.”
