Tucker Arts Fest Helps Habitat for Humanity

Young artists put on a show and win awards in aid of a good cause.

There were birdhouses on display and a silent auction with all kinds of items. But the real stars at the Tucker Arts Fest were the kids who showed off their artistic skills with an inspired collection of their work, many winning awards for their efforts.

The event on Thursday benefited Habitat for Humanity; the school was officially chartered as a Habitat for Humanity International Campus Chapter in 2002. So far, the organization has raised over $100,000 for nine local builds in DeKalb County.

Briana Dayton, THS Social Studies teacher and Habitat for Humanity Volunteer said, "we always try to sponsor a local build each year, and this is our biggest fund raiser going toward that goal."

Dayton noted an increased response from the community this year in terms of being willing to donate to the silent auction. These included funds raised by renting tables for Artists' Market, Kids' Area events (face painting, moon walk, painting bird houses, Spin Art), concessions, sale of t-shirts and auction of hand-painted playhouse, as well as birdhouse sales.

"We are always working on different projects, so we always need donations of materials," Dayton said. "For instance, we're hoping next year to build some picnic tables, and we also are always looking for community volunteers."

Paula Garrett, leader of Brownie Girl Scout Troop in Tucker, said this is their second year participating in the birdhouse sale, and they donated 11 bird houses to the cause this year. "The girls really like [decorating the bird houses]. This feels like you are part of something bigger. This feels really nice."

Garrett's daughter Stella, a second grader at Brockett Elementary said, "I like that once I make a birdhouse and someone buys it, the money goes to Habitat. The most fun thing, though, was getting paint all over me."

The Arts Fest also featured performances by the Tucker High School marching band and a talent show organized by Cindy Lou Harrington, Tucker High School Teacher for the Visually Impaired.
