Sunday Alcohol Sales: Where Do You Go?
Fire, death and fights over rent claimed three Tucker liquor stores in recent months.
Today, May 6, marks the day many local residents have been waiting for: the ability to buy beer, wine and whatever else you fancy in Tucker and the rest of unincorporated DeKalb County.
One small problem. No less than three of Tucker's package stores have closed down within the past few months, leaving a dearth of retail locations in the area for booze shopping.
The first to go was the Embry Hills Bottle Shop, one of the best in the area with a large inventory and competitive prices. It shut its doors abruptly last winter. The reason? A dispute over rent.
Next up was Tucker Package, on Lawrenceville Highway across the street from Fire Station 5. A domestic altercation involving the owner's family was the cause, allegedly resulting in a homicide.
Third on the list is Jack's Package Store. A discarded cigarette in a waste basket destroyed the place on the night of April 9. Owner Natesh Patel said at the time he would re-open eventually, but Patch has since learned that Jack's was not covered by fire insurance, which makes it unlikely.
"Jack's apparently is going to be permanently closed," former employee Chris Fuller said this week. "I was told that no, they had no insurance."

Technically, the Strokers one is in Clarkston and Smoke Rise is in Stone Mountain, so that still leaves Tucker itself with very few choices...

We started going to Tower's on Buford Highway......a bit of a drive longer, but fabulous inventory and prices (cash discount). We are on their e-mail list and they always have interesting events to join. It is one of the best liquor stores in the area.

Technically, Smoke Rise is in Smoke Rise. The community asked the USPS system to allow us to use Smoke Rise for our city and they agreed.

So, of all the ones listed above, where, in Tucker, can we buy alcohol on Sundays? I'm so tired of searching!
