Signing Day: UGA Grabs Josh Dawson

Ceremony at THS yields surprises.

Georgia football fans are breathing a sigh of relief at today's announcement that Tucker Tigers' defensive end Josh Dawson is staying in the state and has accepted a scholarship with UGA.

Dawson had been toying with the idea of going to Vanderbilt in Tennessee, but was eventually persuaded otherwise by a powerful presentation from Bulldogs coach Mark Richt.

At this morning's signing ceremony at Tucker High School, Tigers coach Franklin Stephens beamed as he brought on stage each of the nine signees from his 2011 State Championship team.

Vanderbilt was not left empty-handed as linebacker Jacob Sealand signed on the dotted line. Jordan Landry will go to UT Martin, as will Kenneth Crenshaw. Tuskeegee in Alabama will welcome both Justin Rivers and Marque Biggs.

Nick Collins is headed to LaFayette, Michael Young to Georgia Southern and Adaryl Jones said yes to Averett.

THS Principal James Jackson thanked all the coaches in his opening remarks and said that only players who study hard receive scholarships. "I've seen the greatest athletes walk into this building and they don't get a scholarship because they don't take their work seriously," he said. Jackson congratulated parents, teachers and players, saying, "keep up the good work!"
