Rep. Holcomb Visits Pre-K Students at Henderson Middle

Scott Holcomb read to local 4-year-olds on Monday.

To celebrate Georgia’s Pre-K program and its 20th Anniversary, State Representative Scott Holcomb (D-Atlanta) read to a group of 4-year-olds this morning at Henderson Mill Elementary School as part of Georgia Pre-K Week 2012.

October 1-5 is the state’s 2nd official Georgia Pre-K Week, sponsored by Voices for Georgia’s Children and its Pre-K Week partners. State Representative Scott Holcomb is one of nearly 140 state officials who will visit some of the approximately 3,800 Pre-K classrooms located in all 159 counties in Georgia.

“Early childhood education is critical to the future success of our students, and preparing for elementary school is an important part of life for a child from birth through age five,” said State Representative Scott Holcomb. “I am thrilled to be honoring some of our youngest learners this week, and proud of what our state is accomplishing through Georgia’s Pre-K program,” said Holcomb. “It is critical that we continue to invest in education so we can compete. While Georgia has many challenges, none surpasses the need for us to have a world-class educational system for our children. They will grow up to compete in a globally competitive world, and we need to prepare them for that. It begins with early childhood education.”

"As the parent of a first grade student here, I’m very proud of the school and it was a treat for me to visit,” said Holcomb.  “I’d like to thank Camille Kesler, Grayson Pratt, and Teresa Ebbs from the Junior League of Atlanta for joining me this morning, and I also want to acknowledge and thank Voices for Georgia’s Children and its partners for organizing this wonderful event,” said Holcomb.

“Lastly, I want to applaud Dr. Rebecca Jackson, the principal of Henderson Mill Elementary School, the school’s staff, administration, and its wonderful teachers for their dedication to the students.”

“Georgia’s Pre-K is an exceptional education program that serves 84,000 4-year-olds throughout Georgia,” said Pat Willis, Executive Director of Voices for Georgia’s Children, a child advocacy organization.  “Pre-K is a milestone in a child’s early education. Studies show that early education programs for children age birth to five — in all income groups — will have long-term impact on a child’s education. We are proud that Georgia’s Pre-K is making a difference in the lives of so many of our youngest learners, preparing them for future success in school and in life.”

Rep. Holcomb is the incumbent for House District 81 which covers portions of Northlake, Tucker, Doraville, Chamblee, and Brookhaven in DeKalb County, and the southern part of Norcross in Gwinnett County.
