I was driving home from dinner and had just passed Matthew's when I saw traffic come to an abrupt halt and several people running into the intersection of Idlewood and Lawrenceville Hwy. I figured someone had been struck, since I didn't hear any metal crashing or glass shattering.
I walk around town for most errands and have seen how some drivers don't notice pedestrians and how many pedestrians don't know when to legally cross the street. Perhaps, with the new cameras installed and the pedestrian cross walks updated, everyone can be more aware and get to their destinations safely.

This accident happened in front of us about 5;40 Friday evening. He was in a hurry; had punched the crosswalk button many times, We were stopped for a red-light and so was he. He hurried across the street against the red light. He man crossed in front of a car waiting to turn left onto Idlewood and did not look to see the oncoming car on the other side. He was semi-running into the lane and was hit hard, flew up into the air, spinning like a cart-wheel and landed hard. Didn't move. Others quickly ran to his aid and people were calling 911.

That's terrible. I was on my scooter and ended up on Lawrenceville Highway and Main after it was already closed. It doesn't surprise me that someone was struck, people cross improperly all the time, don't look, as leisurely stroll as if there aren't cars flying down the road. I feel bad for the kid, but people seriously need to exercise more caution when crossing a busy street.

We just learned a few hours ago that this gentleman is one of our barista friends who also worked at Starbucks part time. He's still in critical condition and, to my understanding, is paralyzed. Please keep him and his family in your prayers - it is a miracle that he's still with us.

The signals at that intersection do not function and there are no cameras there. I had thought the issue would have been addressed when they were repainting the crosswalk but apparently not and now someone is seriously injured. As a community we should push to make sure not just this signal but all others properly function.

Update today on Twitter from Roly Poly: "Thank you to everyone for your prayers and good wishes. As of yesterday, we are grateful to know that Eli’s injuries are no longer life-threatening, that he does not appear to have serious brain injury, and that he does appear to have full function above his waist. The rest is wait and see. He is in for a long road of recovery, and your prayers will continue to be welcome and necessary in the coming days and weeks."

Thanks for the update, Kevin! I passed the scene just minutes after it happened. So glad to hear the positive report so far. Hoping & Praying for a miraculous, full recovery! I cross there on my walks to town and am sad to report how unpredictable the crossing lights are. I've waited through a few cycles of lights w/ no luck in giving me a walking signal. Been wanting to call someone and report it, but didn't know where to start...

Another scary place is at Main Street and LaVista. The high school kids cross randomly and the cars go by fast! We cross our children from Kingfisher there sometimes and frequently wait through several light changes to ever get a crosswalk sign. The high schoolers often don't even bother.
