FODAC Hosts Volunteers from Tucker Best Buy Store

Group helps load supplies for Sandy Relief during annual MLK Day of Service.

Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC), a local non-profit organization providing medical equipment and supplies to the disabled community, this week hosted a group of volunteers from three local Best Buy stores.

The volunteer team, comprised of thirteen Best Buy employees from the Tucker, Lithonia and Mall of Georgia stores, were assigned to FODAC as part of a company-wide “Day of Service,” held each year on Martin Luther King Day.

During its volunteer time at FODAC, the Best Buy team was instrumental in getting a shipment of much-needed medical supplies, such as wheelchairs, shower chairs and hospital beds, loaded on a truck headed to New Jersey for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

“Many people are still suffering the aftermath of Sandy, especially the disabled,” said Chris Brand, president of FODAC. “With the help of the Best Buy volunteer team, we were able to get the truck to New Jersey a day earlier, and thus helped the disabled victims of Sandy regain their mobility and independence more quickly.”

Once the truck arrived in New Jersey, the local Federal Emergency Management Agency Disability Integration Specialist worked with several disaster relief agencies to coordinate distribution of the supplies.

In addition to loading the truck, the Best Buy volunteers also sorted equipment in the FODAC warehouse which will be offered to free clinics in Atlanta and to other countries. Volunteers worked in the FODAC Thrift Store as well. This is the third year for a Best Buy team to volunteer at FODAC for Best Buy’s national “Martin Luther King Day of Service.”
