DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Seven Teams Set for State Meets

The GHSA Cross County State meet takes place on Saturday in Carrollton.

DeKalb County will have a strong contingent at the 2011-12 Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state meet set for Saturday, November 5 at the Carrollton High School Course.

Lakeside, Dunwoody and Southwest DeKalb are sending both their boys’ and girls’ teams to compete on Saturday in the Class AAAA state meet. Chamblee’s Maddy Wetterhall qualified as an individual with her Top Six finish at the Region 6-AAAA meet.

The Lakeside Vikings hold five state titles, but have not won since 1975 while finishing second seven times and coming in the Top 10 on 29 occasions. The Vikings are led by sophomore Brian Song who finished fourth in the Region 6-AAAA meet with a time of 17:23.

The Dunwoody Wildcats won a state title in 1974 and have nine Top 10 finishes as a team. Dunwoody is led by Kyle Sexton who finished seventh in Region 6-AAAA with a time of 17:29.

Southwest DeKalb enters the boys’ state meet led by Jacques Williams who finished fifth just behind Dunwoody’s Sexton in the Region 6-AAAA meet. Southwest DeKalb has two Top 10 finishes at state and is still looking for a state title in cross country.

The Class AAAA boys’ state meet starts at 2:30 p.m. and the girls follow at 3 p.m. at the Carrollton course.

Lakeside’s Lady Vikings finished second for the ninth time in 2010 and hold 20 Top 10 finishes as a team. Meghan Wetterhall, the 2088 Class AAAA individual champion, leads Lakeside into the state meet looking to regain her title.

The Lady Wildcats from Dunwoody have a best finish of third at state to go with six Top 10 finishes. Sophomore Alex Cameron was third at region and won the DeKalb County Championship title.

Southwest DeKalb has five Top 10 finishes to its credit in the girls’ state meet and looks to senior Greciana Cooper who took silver medal honors at the region meet last week.

The Druid Hills Red Devils boys’ team is also headed to state after qualifying fourth at the Region 5-AAA meet hosted by St. Pius this past weekend at Mercer University-Atlanta. The Druid Hills girls’ team missed out on the state meet on a tiebreaker with Riverwood.

The Red Devils have a pair of state titles, two second place finishes and 20 Top 10 finishes over the years. Andrew Whetten and Ray Lumb lead Druid Hills into the state meet after finishing fourth and second, respectively, at the Region 5-AAA meet last Saturday. The Class AAA boys’ state meet starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission to the state meet is $5.
