Clay Harper Opening Barbecue Joint in Tucker
The man who started Fellini's and La Fonda comes to town with a new venture.
Clay Harper, a long-time mainstay of both the music and restaurant scenes in Atlanta, is bringing his talents to Tucker with a brand new project.
"I'm working with a couple of guys on The Greater Good Barbecue on Hugh Howell Road," Harper told Tucker Patch. "I think it's going to be really good."
The restaurant will be located in the former home of the Golden Dolphin (and before that the Stage Door) and work on it is well underway.
Harper is known as the man who started Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina, with multiple branches of both around Atlanta. He also owns Three On The Tree Frozen Yogurt in Sandy Springs.
He started his career as a musician with The Coolies and then Ottoman Empire, a band that at one time included journalist Daniel Pearl, who was killed by al-Qaeda terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. Harper owns a record label and production company called Casino Music.
Harper has written a children's book called "Are You Sure That Was A Rabbit" and released "Not Dogs...Too Simple (A Tale of Two Kitties)," an album for kids.
Tucker Patch will be meeting with Harper soon and will have more details on his endeavors.

The Golden dolphin didn't work out at that location because they had a huge menu and didn't specialize in a few excellent items
The last barbecue joint and Tucker didn't work because they didn't have the proper type of smoky sauce that Georgia is so familiar with
And from what I've read the greater good barbecue owners don't have a history in making barbecue
So I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to hire the right people and have excellent barbecue with excellent onion rings and draft beer so here's to you I hope it works out

I've found that metro Atlanta is a landing ground for every major barbecue style. If anything, it's more difficult to find the indigenous lemon-leaning sauce than most other styles. If they're smart they'll try to recruit the folks at Heirloom Market with the opportunity that a big space allows.

Peeked in the window today and saw they already had the menu written up on boards. It appeared to be the standard BBQ fare, with sandwiches, plates and the usual sides. I assume the style is the same as Fatt Matt's. Looks like they are pretty close to being ready to open.
