A local businessman has applied to DeKalb County for a license to open a beer growler in Tucker.

Laurie Morrison, co-owner of the building at 2323 Main Street, told Tucker Patch that an application has been submitted to the county for part of her premises to be used as a beer dispenser and that it should open by March 2013.

"He's started working on the space, but doesn't want to go too far before he gets the go-ahead," Morrison said. She added that it shouldn't be a problem and that the Main Street Tucker Alliance is "all for it."

Morrison, who runs the Main Street School of Art, described the applicant as a "family man who's lived in Tucker for ages" and said this will be his first venture in the growing growler trend.

Not so long ago, there was no alcohol whatsoever to be had in downtown Tucker. Then, Local No. 7 opened in Sept. 2011, followed this year by Las Colinas. During the same period of time, the area lost several liquor stores.

The businessman, whom Morrison did not name, is considering a railroad motif for his location which, coincidentally, Local No. 7 also chose.

A Special Land Use Permit Hearing to consider the request is scheduled for Jan. 8, followed by a meeting of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners' planning department on Jan. 22.

Is this something Tucker needs? How do you feel about all the new businesses opening in town? Tell us in the comments section below-

A hearty 'Yes" to a growler store in Tucker. Right now you have to drive over to Avondale or Decatur or close to Toco Hill to fill up. A local one on Main would be great.

And here's to hoping that it has a nice selection of Belgian Ales as well as some from local brewers like Monday Night Brewing, Blue Tarp, and Three Taverns.

Despite it's odd name, growlers are popping up all over in affluent areas as places for foodies and aficionados to sample craft beers. Having one in Tucker could definitely label us as an upscale neighborhood, much like a wine bar would have a few years back.

Looking forward to another option to purchase craft beer without having to go to Tower on Buford Highway or the growler shop in Oak Grove. That said, it seems to me the whole growler thing is a fad that I doubt will have much staying power. But hey, I'll enjoy it while I can.

Okay, so I don't go to bars very often. What is a growler?

A growler is draft beer sold in 64oz. or 32oz. jugs. That's all. Some people prefer the taste of draft beer and some microbrews are only available in that form. The problem is they don't keep long once opened--maybe a day. Also, don't look for any Budweiser or Coors; it's craft beer only and generally quite expensive.

I should have noted in that comment above that growlers have around for years in other places, but only recent law changes in Georgia have allowed for buying draft beer to go. Also, other than small samples, you can't consume a growler on the premises.

This is fantastic news. More craft beer options. That's never a bad thing. Main St keeps becoming more and more of a desirable destination for fun and frivolity (or, in this case, bringing fun and frivolity home with you).

This is great news. But I hope they can pour and serve also. I want to try each beer before committing to a growler.

There is another growler store being located next to Aldo's on Lawrenceville Highway in the same shopping center as Moe's, They are scheduled to open in Feb. According to that owner, no on premise consumption is allowed in any form and no food. Strictly carry out only and beer selection will change depending on availability. Beside Avondale, there is one in the Oak Grove Community that recently opened. As the previous poster stated this is not your causal inexpensive beer.

Hopefully this means competitive prices and more variety of craft beers. I'm sure the two shops will overlap a bit in offerings, but the competition should be a good thing.

One caveat about the excitement over these growler joints opening up...due to the fact that growler stores are essentially distributors and breweries in GA can't pour growlers for sale on premises, a lot of growler beers aren't really a good deal. Often you can go to Publix, K-roger, what have you and buy beer at a better price. Why pay more for a beer which has a limited shelf life? Hopefully the two new growler stores here will offer at least a few brews that are competitively priced. Given price per ounce I've seen at local growler stores as well as what I've read from other growler fans in the area, most stores only offer a few brews that are competitively priced. I'm still down with growler stores 'cause it means greater variety, but if you can find the bottled beer elsewhere you'll prolly find a better price there, too.

Thank you for the article. We are excited about opening on Main Street downtown. It has been a long process so far but we hope to open in March. In the mean time you can like us on Facebook so you can get updates on our progress, ask us questions, and give suggestions. For Kevin Wade above, fear not...we plan to stock Belgians and local brews at all times.

Unfortunately, Dekalb county does not let us offer taste at this time. We hope that will change in the future where we can give taste. Since Tucker is not an incorporated city we have to go with what Dekalb County rules are.

Good to hear from you, Growler Tom. We need to do an interview with you prior to opening. Best of luck with the planning commission and all the red tape.

In response to Brian Crowe: There will be no beer samples given to customers once the store opens providing it ultimately is approved by the Board of Commissioners. This is not allowed and was discussed with the applicant when he appeared before the Dist. 1 Community Council on Tuesday night. No food will be available for purchase however he stated that he has plans to have a gift shop in an area within the facility. As a Dist. 1 community council member, I have to say that his presentation went quite well and we council members voted for a recommendation of approval.
